Episode Two: Kids Are Crazy

In this episode we take a look at the exciting and mysterious world of the city kid. This recording was made on recent summer afternoon at an uptown schoolyard. I was walking down the street when I heard the telltale deafening roar of an amped up group of kids in a playground. Enjoy!  Direct download link here.

Episode One is ready, fresh from the oven!

At long last, episode one of The Sound of New York is here! *cheering sounds* This is a very bare bones episode, since I am really getting the bugs out and making sure my blog-fu is sharp enough. There will be no recorded intro to the show, so it will kick right into one of the single sounds that inspired me to start this podcast: the maniacs on the street below my apartment. They scream all night long, smash bottles, loudly slam into store gates, etc. But the times when they really really get going are when there's a big game on TV. Crowds form on the sidewalk outside the sportsbar downstairs, which generously lets them mooch off the many giant screen TVs inside. The chaos raises to a fever pitch for a good game, and the Duane Reade starts passing out Ambien by the fistful for the rest of us. So without further delay, please honor me by listening to the raw and uncut field recording simply entitled : Yankees vs Boston 12th Inning

As seen in New York: "he was a cool dude"

I hope that when my time comes someone will send me off with a farewell as good as this one. Part of a R.I.P. tag from my favorite alleyway in Long Island City, Queens.

As seen in New York: fresh out of prison

This is one way to celebrate getting out of jail: commemorate the event by scratching into the subway window frame "just came home - 5 yr bid".

If you happen to be here already...

Things are just starting to shape up around here as you can see, but thanks for showing up early! I should have a test podcast up this weekend and will start posting videos here as well. Lots of city grit and recordings of screeching subways. If you're a fan of deli cats and graffiti covered bathrooms, you're in the right place. Fun for the whole family!
